To enhance the South Main Urban Village, Artist Benito Huerta Lozano has designed pedestrian-scaled sculptural "lanterns" in a conical form for six sidewalk locations along both sides of South Main Street. These striking sculptures will each measure 10 feet in height and three feet in diameter at the bottom graduating to four feet in diameter at the top. The artist's elegant linear design will be created by overlapping shapes from signs and icons the artist discovered on South Main Street, rendered in cut stainless steel, with a stainless steel mesh behind it to allow the energy-efficient LED lights to glow from within.
With the street improvements currently underway along the South Main Street Corridor, the South Main Urban Village is set to become a featured destination for the near south side of Fort Worth. Near Southside, Inc., has been involved with the project since its inception and is enthusiastic about the positive impact this artwork will have on redevelopment of the area. The organization has been involved since the inception of the public art project and has assisted the public art program in organizing community meetings for the artist to receive input throughout the design process.
On October 4, 2013, artist Benito Huerta Lozano was placed under an Agreement for design of public art (City Secretary Contract No. 44938).
Fort Worth Art Commission (FWAC) Action: On March 7, 2016, the FWAC approved the artist's design for artwork and recommended the artist be placed under an artwork commission contract.
Under this commission contract, the artist will fabricate, deliver and install the artwork per the approved final design.
Funding for the commission phase of the project has been allocated from the Specially Funded Capital Projects Fund (Public Art Fund) and the project was included in the Fort Worth Public Art Fiscal Year 2016 Annual Work Plan, adopted by the Fort Worth City Council on October 27, 2015 as M&C C-27515.
